Literary translator from Bulgarian into Serbian in residency at Next Page Foundation / Literature and Translation House in Sofia, Bulgaria
Bio
Jasmina Jovanović is a native of Belgrade, Serbia. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Bulgarian philology from the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Philology (1993) and holds a Master’s in Literary studies (2005). Currently, she teaches Bulgarian literature, Practical language and Literary translation at the same university.
She has been engaged in literary translation since 2000. She has translated Bulgarian writers such as Boris Hristov, Svetlana Dicheva, Milen Ruskov, Inna Valchanova, Deyan Enev, Zdravka Evtimova, Miroslav Penkov and several stories published in the literary press. Jasmina is a member of the Association of Literary Translators of Serbia.
The last Bulgarian novel she has translated is the 2023 Booker International winner ‘Time Shelter’ by Georgi Gospodinov. The book was published in Serbia in July 2023 by ‘Geopoetika’.
Residency goals
During her residency at at Next Page Foundation / Sofia Literature and Translation House, Jasmina will be working on the translation of a Bulgarian novel that she intends to pitch to a Belgrade publishing house. She is also going to meet contemporary authors and fellow translators in the search of her next translations from Bulgarian.
