Open Call: Writer and Literary Translators Residency in Zagreb

The Croatian Literary Translators’ Association (CLTA) for literary translators and writers is offering 1 to 4 week residency stays in Zagreb, Croatia.
General conditions
Applications are open to both literary translators who live abroad and translate Croatian writers, and foreign writers whose works are currently being translated into Croatian. Eligible candidates are foreign translators and authors with at least one published literary work.
Part of the residency stay is dedicated to working on the text which brought the residents to Zagreb, while the other part includes activities such as panel discussions with fellow translators and writers, workshops and master classes at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as tandems with peers and guest appearances at literature festivals.
For the duration of their stay, residents will be accommodated in an apartment located in the centre of Zagreb and receive a daily allowance of €20.
Duration of residency: 1 to 4 weeks
Description of residency: The room with attached bathroom and access to the shared kitchen. The residency hosts an average of 8 to 15 residents a year and is based in the centre of Zagreb.
Contributions during the stay: Residents are invited to write a text for the residency blog that is published during or after their stay. They will also be invited to literary meetings, public readings and events at city libraries and to share their know-how with students from Croatian Universities.

- the title of the book they wish to work on during their stay.

The residency program participants are selected through special invitation and through open calls for proposals. In both cases, decisions are taken by the Program Board of the Croatian Literary Translators’ Association and the project coordinator.

TANDEM fellowships:
Open call for writers and translators for a joint residency in Bucharest, Romania
New Europe College – Institute for Advanced Study is launching a new fellowship program: TANDEM, author with translator – translator with author is a program exclusively dedicated to literati, writers and translators, with the aim to promote authors from the Black Sea Region by encouraging the translation of their work into the local languages. Moreover, the program will deepen and disseminate the knowledge in and about the literary landscapes around the Black Sea and raise esteem for people and procedures involved.
General conditions
The fellowship program targets writers and translators from: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine. Applicants from the Baltics or the Western Balkans may be considered under special circumstances.
TANDEM offers fellowships consisting of:
- a residence (at least two consecutive months, up to five months in total) at New Europe College in Bucharest for a Tandem team (author and translator);
- a monthly stipend for each Tandem participant (850 € p. p.).
- travel and accommodation funds;
- workspace and office equipment at New Europe College;
- assistance with visa procedures, residence permit, access to local institutions (libraries), etc.
Additional funds for working materials, for small public events, possibly even for a publication, may be granted depending on the case.
During their residency, Tandems belong to the diverse international community of NEC fellows and are invited to all NEC events.
The writer (novelist, poet, playwright, children’s or nonfiction author) and his or her translator are in residence at the NEC at the same time and stay for at least two consecutive months. The residency cannot exceed five months. The Tandem team (author and translator) can indicate a preferred period for their residency. However, the exact period of the residency shall be agreed upon together with NEC.
Start of the fellowship: May 2023
Application process
Applications may be submitted jointly or by one or the other of the Tandem partners. If the application is submitted by one member of the team, the other shall confirm his/her participation in writing.
The application must include short CVs for both persons with a list of works, as well as a description of the work to be translated (which should be already published or, at least, accepted for publication). This description should include a justification of the choice of the particular work to be translated.

Open Call: Literary Translation Residency in Montenegro
The residency is offered by Otvoreni Kulturni Forum, Cetinje and is part of the Translation in Motion project
Otvoreni Kulturni Forum is offering a month-long residency in Cetinje, Montenegro in 2023 within the Translation in Motion project to two literary translators working from Montenegrin into the languages of the EU countries.
Deadline for applications is Friday 20th January 2023.
General conditions
The duration of the residence in Cetinje, Montenegro is one month and should be carried out no later than July 2023. Eligible translators can be citizens of any EU country.
During the residency, the translator is expected to work intensively on the literary translation project with which they applied, to participate in events or activities of the host organisation, and to network with colleagues in Montenegro.
The host organisation offers free accommodation in the residency centre, a travel grant, and a monthly fellowship to cover living expenses.

To apply, candidates are invited to send:
- a letter of interest outlining their motives for applying for the residency;
- a description of their literary translation project they will work on during the residency;
- a CV.

Culture Moves Europe:
Mobility for artists and professionals
Culture Moves Europe is a scheme that supports the mobility of artists, creators and cultural professionals, part of Creative Europe’s Culture strand.
Supporting international mobility
Culture Moves Europe connects artists, creators, and cultural professionals from the countries participating in the Creative Europe programme. The mobility scheme is particularly focused on emerging artists.
The scheme builds on the outcomes of I-Portunus pilot phase, that preceded Culture Moves Europe from 2018 to 2022. You can find detailed information and testimonials from beneficiaries of I-Portunus.
Culture Moves Europe has a budget of €21 million between 2022 and 2025. This allows around 7 000 artists, creators, and cultural professionals to:
- Go abroad for professional development or international collaborations;
- Co-produce;
- Co-create;
- Present their works to new audiences.
Types of grant
1. Individual mobilities action
For individual artists and cultural professionals travelling between 7 and 60 days or groups of individuals (up to 5 persons travelling between 7 and 21 days).
Rolling calls for all sectors at once will be open every year between autumn and spring.
2. Residencies action
- Short term residencies from 1 to 3 months;
- Long term residencies from 3 to 6 months;
- extended residencies up to 10 months.
Calls for each sector will be open twice during the duration of the scheme.
Who can apply
The scheme is open for:
- Аrtists, creators, and cultural professionals working in any cultural sector except the audio-visual sector;
- Оrganisations working in any cultural sectors except the audio-visual, regularly organising residencies or other types of place-bound cultural projects and are interested in hosting artists and cultural professionals.

CEATL has published Companion for Literary Translators’ Associations: an online platform for translator communities
CEATL launched published the Companion for Literary Translators’ Associations, an online platform for translator communities looking for advice, encouragement or simply inspiration.

The Companion focusses on some of the main challenges that existing or aspiring Literary Translators’ Associations face, and makes suggestions based on case studies and experience gathered over the years from CEATL member associations.
The platform is structured according to eight chapters that reflect the various stages of development that a translators’ association can go through, from founding (Getting Started, Recruiting & Motivating Members) through consolidation (Fundraising, Lobbying, Visibility) to fine tuning (Continued Professional Development, Building a Dialogue with Publishers, Residencies).
The chapters feature short articles on each of these topics, illustrated by real stories and initiatives implemented by translators’ associations from across Europe.
The idea for this tool arose from the constant sharing of experience between CEATL members, who meet each year to discuss what went well, what didn’t and what they can learn from each other. The website was built gradually by the CEATL Best Practices Working Group over the past two years. You can read the story of the Companion’s evolution in this article written for Counterpoint magazine by Iztok Ilc, the CEATL delegate of the Slovenian Association of Literary Translators.
The Companion for Literary Translators’ Associations will constantly be updated with new stories. Translators’ associations are always welcome to send their experiences and opinions to the CEATL Best Practices Working Group.
ATLAS et le projet Livres des deux rives – un dialogue méditerranéen par le livre
Première langue parlée par les populations les plus récemment arrivées en Europe, et par plus de 500 millions de locuteurs dans le monde, la langue arabe reste, dans le champ des échanges de traduction, une « langue rare » dont peu de publications se font l’écho. La traduction littéraire, comprise au sens large comme la traduction d’œuvres de l’esprit à visée éditoriale, qu’il s’agisse de fiction ou de non fiction (sciences humaines et sociales), représente justement une partie de cet écho nécessaire au dialogue entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée.
Cette pauvreté du flux de traduction produit une forte invisibilité : Emmanuel Varlet parle de « vision subjective et unilatérale des langues orientales […] ne [pouvant] qu’entraver l’échange entre les cultures ». Et si la littérature arabe en général est sous-représentée dans le flux de traduction vers le français, la Méditerranée occidentale est encore moins visible par rapport à la production littéraire de son pendant oriental. En effet, le rôle historiquement prédominant de l’Egypte et du Liban sur le marché du livre en arabe a laissé peu de place à la professionnalisation du milieu au Maroc, en Tunisie et en Algérie ; la tradition littéraire en langue arabe dans ces pays est relativement jeune et n’a pas de fondations aussi solides.
S’appuyant sur ces constats, ATLAS s’est associée en 2021 au projet européen LEILA, fondé sur une volonté commune de favoriser en Europe la connaissance, via la traduction, de la nouvelle scène littéraire arabophone. Livres des deux rives – un dialogue méditerranéen par le livre poursuit l’engagement d’ATLAS en faveur de la littérature arabe contemporaine en encourageant l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de traducteurs. Ce projet innovant porté par l’Institut Français vise à répondre à une problématique de fond, spécifique aux pays de la Méditerranée occidentale, et à poser des jalons pour la traduction littéraire à venir. Il s’agit ici à la fois de former la nouvelle génération de traducteurs, ces personnages clés de la chaine du livre, porteurs d’idées et défenseurs de littératures, et de produire une anthologie non exhaustive d’œuvres à traduire en sciences humaines et sociales.

Atelier long de professionnalisation
Cet atelier long, destiné à trois traducteurs de l‘arabe vers le français et trois traducteurs du français vers l’arabe, se tiendra à Arles du 21 novembre 2022 au 29 janvier 2023, avec une semaine de repos entre le 24 décembre et le 1er janvier. Destiné en priorité à ceux des participants qui se seront distingués lors des ateliers de sensibilisation et qui souhaitent poursuivre l’aventure, il vise à professionnaliser les stagiaires et à leur offrir les outils méthodologiques et les contacts leur permettant de publier une première traduction. Les participants seront hébergés au Collège International des traducteurs littéraires et bénéficieront d’une bourse d’étude. Trois duos de tuteurs se succéderont, de manière à proposer aux participants un aperçu varié de la profession et des enjeux de la traduction littéraire dans différents genres et domaines ; d’autres personnalités de la traduction et du monde du livre, tel que des auteurs et des éditeurs, seront également invités ponctuellement à partager leur expérience. La formation se terminera par une présentation publique des travaux réalisés pendant la durée de l’atelier, présentation à laquelle seront invités des éditeurs, permettant aux stagiaires d’échanger au sujet des textes qu’ils auront choisis.

The Translation in Motion consortium of translation residencies invites applications by literary translators working from or into the languages of the countries of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia).

Translation in Motion is a programme that aims to enrich and intensify the flow of translated literature in contemporary Europe, and specifically between the Western Balkans countries and the EU member states.
Recognizing that literary translators are influential and driven ambassadors of cultural dialogue, this programme will provide international mobility and professional development.
The residencies offer translators time for focused creative work on a literary translation project, the opportunity to immerse themselves in the source language of their translation and carry out research, and to raise their visibility by networking with the local literary sector and presenting their work to local audiences.
Eligibility
The residencies are offered by a range of host organizations. We welcome proposals from literary translators working from or into the languages of the countries of the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia). Depending on the language combination and host organization, eligible translators should be citizens of any EU country or any country of the Western Balkans.

In the light of COVID-19, all residency dates are provisional and will depend on the lifting of restrictions on international travel and local lockdowns. Each residency host will ensure that COVID-secure measures are in place, according to the relevant government guidelines.
LEILA – Arabic Literature in European Languages: Residency Call
LEILA – the reverse acronym for Arabic Literature in European Languages is founded on a common desire to promote the translation and circulation of the new Arabic-speaking literary scene in Europe.
The call for projects for the first residency, which will be hosted in Arles from June 14 to June 18 2021, is open until April 30 2021.
“Layla” (“night”) is a word charged in Arabic with a very positive connotation: a feminine first name of pre-Islamic origin, “Leïla” means “the beginning of vertigo and the intoxication of love”. This name also refers to the Thousand and One Nights (in Arabic, “Alf layla wa-layla”), one of the first literary corpus translated from Arabic, which circulated in Europe as early as the 12th century. Finally, LEILA convokes in the imaginary “Majnûn Layla”, a popular love story of pre-Islamic origin, a work of the universal that dialogues through its poems with all the cultures of the Middle East and Central Asia.
The LEILA project will take place over three years, with three key-actions:
- To structure a network of actors and organizations in the field of Euro-Arab literature and publishing
- To promote the “discoverability” of the new Arabic-speaking literary scene in Europe
- To strengthen the capacities and visibility of the new European
As a project partner, ATLAS will be hosting two highlights of the project. In June 2021 a forum about translation from Arabic in European languages will be held in Arles . Ten translators will join forces during a one week residency at the International College of Literary Translators (CITL) at the Espace Van Gogh, to map the existing editorial landscapes for texts translated from Arabic to European languages, and to share best practices about the discoverability of new texts, their promotion and translation. A second residency will happen in 2023, allowing to share the work accomplished since 2021, the new authors who have been discovered, and the tools put in place to facilitate the rise of new voices from the Arab world to be translated.

Sofia Literature and Translation House welcomes applications for its residency program for 2021
Sofia Literature and Translation House reopens its international residency program hoping that in 2021 international mobility will be possible again.
Writers and literary translators are invited to submit their letters of interest no later than March 31 2021.
The program welcomes applications from writers and professional literary translators of Bulgarian literature from all over the world to work on their projects in Sofia, to establish new contacts with colleagues and to meet new audiences.
