DESCRIPTION

Translation House Looren in Wernetshausen near Zurich offers a place for professional literary translators from all over the world to stay for several weeks and work on their projects. The house is situated in a quiet rural location, ideal for concentrated work and exchanges between colleagues. It was founded in 2005 and is the only institution of its kind in Switzerland – a country that, with its four national languages, has been a natural home for translation all along.

Through workshops and conferences we offer a broad range of further education opportunities for literary translators. At our events, translators take centre stage and put in evidence the value of this creative profession to a broader audience. We are in continual contact with key players in the literary industry, in Switzerland and internationally.

Translation House Looren is run by the association of the same name, and two thirds privately funded. Through membership in the association, individuals and institutions can support our activities.

Le Collège de traducteurs Looren accueille à Wernetshausen, dans le canton de Zurich, des traducteurs littéraires professionnels du monde entier, qui peuvent se consacrer à leurs projets pendant quelques semaines. Située dans un cadre champêtre et tranquille, la maison est un lieu d’échange collégial et de travail concentré. Le Collège a été fondé en 2005 et il est la seule institution de ce genre en Suisse – un pays qui, avec ses quatre langues nationales, est depuis toujours une terre de traduction.

Sous forme d’ateliers et de colloques, nous offrons aux traducteurs littéraires un large éventail de formations continues spécialisées. Nos manifestations sont l’occasion de placer les traductrices et les traducteurs sous les feux de la rampe et de faire connaître à un large public la valeur de ce métier créatif. Nous entretenons un échange perpétuel avec les acteurs importants de la scène littéraire suisse et internationale.

Le Collège de traducteurs Looren est géré par l’association du même nom et les trois quarts de son financement sont assurés par des moyens privés. L’adhésion à l’association permet aux particuliers et aux institutions de soutenir les activités du Collège.

APPLICATIONS / CANDIDATURES

Requirements for a residency include: publication of at least one book-length literary translation (first-time translators are supported in the context of our emerging translators programme), and a valid publishing contract for the translation project you will be working on during your stay.

Please also provide the following documents at time of application (only applications with complete documents will be processed):

• Completed online application form
• Short CV
• Copy of your publishing contract signed by both parties

The following content of the contract must be provided in one of our working languages (German, French, English, Italian or Spanish): 1. translation delivery deadline, 2. planned publication date, 3. print run, 4. your fee.

COSTS / FRAIS

• From day one to day 14: CHF 50 per person
• Each additional week: CHF 25 per person
• Communal dinner (once a week): CHF 10 per person
• Printouts, copies, scans: CHF 0.10 per page

Translation House Looren does not cover travel costs.

You can apply for a contribution to your residency costs from our support fund. Please submit this application at the same time as your residency application. You will find all necessary information here.

We accept applications for residencies at all times. Provided we have free rooms, short-notice registrations are also possible.

BOOKS / LIVRES

We ask our guests to send us a copy of their translation for our library upon publication (please send two copies of works of Swiss literature). These go into our Looren Collection.

LIBRARY / BIBLIOTHÈQUE

A library of several thousand volumes, primarily reference works and dictionaries, is available to residents around the clock. In addition, we subscribe to magazines in several languages. On-line catalogue

EXTRAS

Each resident receives a free rail pass, good for one day’s travel, to Zurich or the surrounding areas. In addition, we organize a weekly communal dinner.

Une fois par semaine, nous organisons un repas commun le soir. Nous offrons à tous nos hôtes un billet journalier pour une excursion à Zurich ou dans les environs.

OTHER ACTIVITIES / AUTRES ACTIVITÉS 

Notre programme de manifestations est destiné à promouvoir et à faire connaître la traduction littéraire. Nos lectures, ateliers de travail et congrès offrent aux traducteurs et traductrices un lieu de formation continue spécialisée et cherchent à ouvrir le dialogue avec un public plus large.

Our program of events is designed to promote the field of literary translation. Readings, workshops, and conferences provide translators with ongoing professional training and encourage dialogue with an interested public.
